PhD Epidemiology

Of course, while we’d like to think that doctors of epidemiology may help to stop the next zombie apocalypse, there is something to be said for the PhD epidemiology degree. Epidemiologists study health related events and patterns in a particular population.  These studies and collection of statistical data are used to interpret and make important medical decisions and design important clinical trials.

A day in the life of an epidemiologist includes outbreak investigation, screening, surveying all sorts of diseases, and with the help of biology, statistics, and social sciences, they learn how to prevent, treat, and diagnose various diseases that can affect one person to an entire population.  As a PhD epidemiology student, you will study biostatistics, health and human rights, statistical computing, infectious diseases, public health ethics, survey research in epidemiology, and then you will compose a thesis that you would have been developing through your degree program.

By earning a PhD epidemiology degree, you may find work in a number of different locations including universities and hospitals. For those with advanced degrees or even those who are more seasoned in epidemiology, you may find work in government agencies. These can include the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, or the Health Protection Agency.

Keeping the world’s population disease free and health is the goal of any PhD epidemiology degree holder. This field of work can be very exciting, dangerous, but also extremely rewarding not only for you and your family, but for the world.
