Distance Learning Ph D

A New Option: Distance Learning Ph D

Finding the right Ph D program itself is an arduous process.  Because of the highly specialized nature of Ph D study, you have to find a program with the resources that will aid you in the research and writing you intend to do.  If you live in a region without many universities with large departments in your academic field, you may have thought that enrolling in a Ph D program would be impossible, or unlikely, without relocating.  But distance learning Ph D options have changed the entire academic landscape–literally.

You no longer have to depend on what options are available in your particular region.  You don’t have to limit yourself to the interests of advisors within commuting distance or face the chore of relocating.  Getting your Ph D–doing the research you actually want to–has never been easier than it is now with the increasing numbers of distance learning Ph D options available.

How is a distance learning doctoral program different than an on-campus program?

Distance learning programs differ from on-campus programs in a number of ways.  First of all, classes are conducted online.

This means you submit your assignments via email, or sometimes through the school’s website directly.  It also often means fewer expenses for textbooks and so forth.  When getting your distance learning Ph D of course, classes won’t be your main focus.  You’ll only have a few required courses in that respect.  Most of your efforts will be concentrated on your research and dissertation.  You’ll communicate with your advisor in a variety of ways, and most distance learning Ph D programs have some “residency” requirements–i.e. set visits for you to meet your advisor and fellow Ph D candidates, attend lectures, etc.

Receiving fellowships with a distance learning doctoral program can be more difficult; be sure to investigate tuition costs carefully.
