• What kind of jobs are out there for accounting PhD program graduates?

  There are a multitude of available job options for those who hold a PhD in accounting, and now is a particularly good time for accounting PhD grads.  Why? Because there’s a significant shortage of PhDs in accounting on university faculty nationwide.  It’s one of the few PhDs where you can almost be guaranteed a job on the staff of a college or university.  In fact, right now, there are some colleges and universities that are accepting accounting program students–those who are almost finished, but haven’t yet finished their dissertation, usually.

  Well, first of all, a solid education in accounting of course!  Most PhD programs require that you’ve got a master’s degree in accounting or a related field, although with a strong enough background otherwise, a master’s degree in an unrelated field may be acceptable. You’ll have to submit all of your school transcripts and compose a brief but information dense statement of purpose that summarizes why this program is right for you, and what you have to offer it.

  Research and more research!  Your research, your advisor’s research–did I mention research? The vast majority of your time will be spent on your dissertation and the bulk of that time will be–that’s right, research.  You’ll have some coursework on research methods and theories, too.
