Doctorate Degree

A doctorate degree is the highest degree one can earn in their field. Many people may know it as a “PhD”. The term “doctorate” is derived from the Latin word “docere”, meaning, “to teach”. There are a number of different kinds of doctorate degrees to consider when deciding to earn that title of “doctor”.

In many cases, a PhD (or Doctor of Philosophy) is considered a “research doctorate”. This usually refers to a being published in an academic journal. Usually these publications are in the form of a dissertation or thesis. In many cases, this degree program can take anywhere from 3-10 years to complete.

However, should you prefer to earn a degree for professional purposes, there are professional doctorates that can also be earned. For example, most medical doctors earn the title of “MD”, which stands for “Medicinae Doctor” or as we know it, Doctor of Medicine. There are also the following professional doctorates:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) – Law degree
- Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
- Doctor of Education (EdD)
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
- Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
- Doctor of Biblical Studies (DBS)
- Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD)
- Doctor of Professional Studies (DPS)

There are additional doctorate degree programs available, however these are some of the more popular professional doctorates students can earn.
