Should You Be Considering a Doctorate in Computer Science?

Getting a doctorate degree is a huge commitment.  Deciding whether or not you’re ready to start thinking about a doctorate degree in computer science is opening the door to a lot of questions.

Questions like…

What does a comp sci doctorate entail?

Doctoral study is entirely different from undergraduate and master’s degree study.  For one thing, you’re not going to be taking that many classes–you should already know your subject inside and out.  The classes you will be taking will be things like “Statistical Analysis” and “Research Methodology.” Of course, you may want to supplement required classes with additional courses that bring you up to speed in particular aspects of your subject.  But mostly, your doctorate in computer science is going to depend on your own research and dissertation.

What kind of careers are open to those with a comp sci doctorate?

Having a doctorate mainly prepares you for careers in research, and for teaching computer science at the college level.  Because doctoral study is typically research based, it’s not really necessary for you to have a doctorate in computer science for most corporate jobs.

Am I really ready for a comp sci doctorate?

This is one of the hardest questions to answer.  Are you able to work independently? Are you prepared for the responsibility of heading up a research project?  Are you proficient at analytical, academic writing?  If the answers to these questions are yes, then you might be ready for your doctorate in computer science.  You’ll also need to have a clear idea of what you want to focus on for your research.

Where do I start looking for a doctoral degree in computer science?

There are both on campus and online options for comp sci doctorates.  Start by looking at faculty that have similar interests–choosing your advisor will be very important.
